Preparation Tips
General Tips
- Start 2-3 months early: Consistent daily practice is more effective than cramming
- Take a diagnostic test: Know your starting level before creating a study plan
- Focus on weak areas: Most Zimbabweans score well in Reading and Listening but find Writing Task 2 and Speaking challenging. Focus your preparation accordingly
- Practice under timed conditions: The test is time-pressured. Simulate real test conditions in practice
- Learn the test format: Knowing what to expect reduces anxiety. Each section has specific question types
By Section
Listening (30 minutes)
- Listen to BBC, podcasts, and TED Talks daily
- Practice note-taking while listening
- Read questions before audio plays
- Watch for spelling - errors cost marks
Reading (60 minutes)
- Skim passages first, then answer questions
- Practice reading English newspapers and journals
- Time management is critical - 20 minutes per passage
- Don't leave blanks - guess if unsure
Writing (60 minutes)
- Task 2 is worth twice as much as Task 1
- Structure essays clearly: introduction, 2-3 body paragraphs, conclusion
- Use a range of vocabulary and grammar structures
- Minimum 150 words (Task 1) and 250 words (Task 2)
Speaking (11-14 minutes)
- Speak clearly and at a natural pace
- Expand answers - don't give one-word responses
- Part 2: use the 1-minute prep time to make notes
- Practice with a partner or record yourself
