Preparation Tips

General Tips

  • Start 2-3 months early: Consistent daily practice is more effective than cramming
  • Take a diagnostic test: Know your starting level before creating a study plan
  • Focus on weak areas: Most Zimbabweans score well in Reading and Listening but find Writing Task 2 and Speaking challenging. Focus your preparation accordingly
  • Practice under timed conditions: The test is time-pressured. Simulate real test conditions in practice
  • Learn the test format: Knowing what to expect reduces anxiety. Each section has specific question types

By Section

Listening (30 minutes)

  • Listen to BBC, podcasts, and TED Talks daily
  • Practice note-taking while listening
  • Read questions before audio plays
  • Watch for spelling - errors cost marks

Reading (60 minutes)

  • Skim passages first, then answer questions
  • Practice reading English newspapers and journals
  • Time management is critical - 20 minutes per passage
  • Don't leave blanks - guess if unsure

Writing (60 minutes)

  • Task 2 is worth twice as much as Task 1
  • Structure essays clearly: introduction, 2-3 body paragraphs, conclusion
  • Use a range of vocabulary and grammar structures
  • Minimum 150 words (Task 1) and 250 words (Task 2)

Speaking (11-14 minutes)

  • Speak clearly and at a natural pace
  • Expand answers - don't give one-word responses
  • Part 2: use the 1-minute prep time to make notes
  • Practice with a partner or record yourself

Healthcare workers: If you are a nurse, doctor, or pharmacist, consider taking OET instead of IELTS. OET tests English in a healthcare context, which many professionals find more relevant and achievable. OET is accepted by the UK NMC, GMC, GPhC, AHPRA (Australia), and NMBI (Ireland). You can also combine IELTS scores from two sittings for NMC registration.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no limit on how many times you can take IELTS. You can retake the test as soon as you feel ready. However, each attempt costs USD 265, so prepare thoroughly before retaking. Many candidates improve by 0.5-1.0 band with focused preparation between attempts. With IELTS One Skill Retake, you can retake just one section (only available for computer-delivered tests).

Unfortunately, Zimbabwe is NOT on most countries' English-exempt lists, despite English being an official language. The UK, Canada, Australia, and NZ generally only exempt nationals from countries like the UK, US, Canada, Australia, NZ, and Ireland. Some individual UK universities may waive IELTS for Zimbabweans who completed education in English, but this is at the university's discretion and not applicable for visa applications. You will need IELTS (or an alternative) for most immigration and professional registration purposes.

For UK NMC (nursing) registration, you can combine scores from two IELTS sittings within 6 months - you need 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 in each band, and can use the best score from each component across two tests. For immigration purposes (Canada Express Entry, Australia), you must use scores from a single test sitting. Some UK universities also accept the best scores across two sittings.

Both are equally valid and have the same content. Computer-delivered IELTS offers faster results (1-5 days vs 13 days), more available test dates, and is better if you type faster than you write. Paper-based IELTS may be better if you prefer writing by hand, are not comfortable with computers, or want to underline/annotate reading passages. The Speaking section is face-to-face with an examiner in both versions.
