Eastern Highlands Travel Guide 2026

The Eastern Highlands is Zimbabwe’s mountain paradise — a 300-kilometre chain of mountains, forests, and waterfalls running along the Mozambique border from Nyanga in the north to Chimanimani in the south. With misty peaks rising above 2,500 metres, cascading waterfalls including the 762-metre Mtarazi Falls (Zimbabwe’s highest), ancient forests draped in orchids and ferns, coffee plantations, and a refreshingly cool mountain climate, the Eastern Highlands offers a completely different experience from the hot lowveld safaris that most visitors associate with Zimbabwe. The gateway city of Mutare and the mountain districts of Nyanga, Vumba, and Chimanimani each have their own distinct character.

The Vumba Mountains

The Vumba (meaning “mist” in Shona) is a lush, misty mountain range just 30km southeast of Mutare. The area is famous for its botanical gardens, luxury hotels, and atmospheric cloud forests.

  • Vumba Botanical Garden: A beautifully maintained 237-hectare garden showcasing indigenous and exotic plants. The cloud forest section is home to the rare Samango monkey, and the views on clear days stretch across Mozambique’s Chimanimani plain.
  • Leopard Rock Hotel: One of Zimbabwe’s most famous hotels, a castle-like property with an 18-hole championship golf course, set among forested mountains at 1,500m altitude.
  • Burma Valley: Zimbabwe’s premier coffee-growing region. Several estates offer tours and tastings of locally grown Arabica coffee.
  • Bunga Forest: A rare montane forest with hiking trails through indigenous woodland.

Waterfalls of the Eastern Highlands

The Eastern Highlands contain some of Africa’s most spectacular waterfalls, fed by the high rainfall on the mountain escarpment.

Mtarazi Falls is the undisputed star — at 762 metres, it is the highest waterfall in Zimbabwe and one of the highest in Africa. The falls plunge off the escarpment into the lush Honde Valley below. The viewpoint on the escarpment rim offers a dizzying perspective straight down the cliff face. The falls are at their most powerful from February to May after the summer rains.

Coffee & Tea Plantations

The Eastern Highlands is the heart of Zimbabwe’s coffee and tea industry. The combination of altitude (1,000-1,800m), reliable rainfall, and volcanic soils creates perfect growing conditions.

  • Tanganda Tea Estate: Zimbabwe’s oldest and largest tea producer, based in Chipinge. Factory tours show the process from leaf to cup.
  • Honde Valley Coffee: Small-scale Arabica coffee farms in the Honde Valley produce some of Southern Africa’s finest coffee. The Farfell estate welcomes visitors.
  • Cashel Valley: A scenic valley between Chimanimani and Mutare known for macadamia nuts, avocados, and coffee.

Getting There & Getting Around

  • From Harare: Mutare is 263km east (3-4 hours) via the A3 highway. Well-maintained tar road.
  • From Bulawayo: 570km (7 hours) via Masvingo.
  • Internal travel: A car is essential for exploring the highlands. The main roads are tarred, but access roads to some waterfalls and viewpoints require high clearance. Nyanga is 105km north of Mutare; Chimanimani is 150km south.
  • Climate: Significantly cooler than the lowveld. Bring warm layers, especially for evenings. Temperatures range from 10-22°C in winter and 15-28°C in summer. Rain falls mainly November-March.

FAQ

The Eastern Highlands are beautiful year-round. The dry season (May-October) offers clear skies and pleasant hiking weather. The rainy season (November-March) brings the waterfalls to life and the landscape is lush and green. The Vumba is misty year-round, which adds to its atmosphere. April-May is ideal for waterfalls at peak flow with improving weather.

The Eastern Highlands feel like a different country. Instead of the hot, dry lowveld, you find cool mountain air, misty forests, waterfalls, and green meadows. It is often compared to the Scottish Highlands or parts of Southeast Asia. The region offers hiking, birdwatching, and coffee plantations rather than big-game safaris.

Yes. Mtarazi Falls (762m, Zimbabwe’s highest waterfall) is accessible from the Honde Valley escarpment rim in the Nyanga area. A 2km walk from the car park brings you to a viewpoint overlooking the falls. The best time to visit is February-May when the falls are at peak flow. The access road requires a vehicle but is passable in a standard car.

Generally very safe. There are no dangerous big game in the mountain areas (unlike lowveld parks). The main risks are weather changes (mist can descend quickly), slippery paths near waterfalls, and altitude in the higher areas. Stay on marked trails, carry water and warm clothing, and tell someone your route.
