Nyanga National Park Guide 2026

Nyanga National Park sits at the northern end of Zimbabwe’s Eastern Highlands, encompassing the country’s highest peak — Mount Nyangani at 2,592 metres — along with pristine trout dams, tumbling waterfalls, rolling highland meadows, and ancient forests. At an altitude of 1,800 to 2,593 metres, Nyanga enjoys a cool, temperate climate that feels a world away from the hot African lowveld. Long beloved by Zimbabweans as a weekend retreat, the park offers trout fishing, scenic hiking, horse riding, and some of the most beautiful highland scenery in Southern Africa. The charming Nyanga village, nearby historic hotels, and accessible attractions make this the most family-friendly destination in the Eastern Highlands.

Mount Nyangani

At 2,592 metres, Mount Nyangani is Zimbabwe’s highest point. The hike to the summit is a popular day trek, starting from the car park on the Scenic Road and following a marked trail through montane grassland to the rocky summit plateau.

Waterfalls & Scenic Highlights

  • Pungwe Falls: A magnificent waterfall where the Pungwe River plunges over the escarpment edge. The falls are accessible by a short drive from Nyanga village followed by a walk to the viewpoint. Spectacular during the rainy season.
  • Nyangombe Falls: A beautiful cascade near the historic Rhodes Nyanga Hotel, easily reached by a pleasant forest walk. Perfect for families.
  • Mtarazi Falls: Zimbabwe’s highest waterfall (762m) is technically within the Nyanga area, on the Honde Valley escarpment (see our Eastern Highlands page).
  • World’s View (Nyanga): A different World’s View from the one in Matobo Hills, this viewpoint near Nyanga offers stunning panoramas across the Eastern Highlands and down into Mozambique on clear days.
  • Mare Dam: A scenic dam popular for picnics and birdwatching, surrounded by pine forests and highland meadows.

Trout Fishing

Nyanga is Zimbabwe’s trout fishing capital. Rainbow and brown trout were introduced to the highland rivers and dams in the early 1900s, and the cool, clean mountain waters provide ideal conditions.

  • Nyanga Dam: The largest dam in the park, regularly stocked with rainbow trout. Boat and bank fishing available.
  • Mare Dam: A quieter option, popular with fly fishers.
  • Gulliver Dam: Smaller and more secluded, offering a peaceful fishing experience.
  • Rivers: The Pungwe, Nyangombe, and other highland streams offer wild trout fishing for experienced anglers.

Permits: A ZPWMA fishing permit is required (available at the park office). The season runs September to May. Fly fishing, spinning, and bait fishing are all permitted. Catch limits apply.

FAQ

The hike is rated moderate. The trail is well-defined for most of the route, with a steeper rocky section near the summit. Allow 3-4 hours for the round trip. The main challenge is weather — mist can descend quickly and temperatures drop significantly at altitude. Always register at the park office, start early, and carry warm layers and rain gear.

Nyanga is one of the most family-friendly destinations in Zimbabwe. The trout dams, easy waterfall walks, horse riding, and resort-style accommodation at Troutbeck and Rhodes Hotel make it ideal for families with children of all ages. The cool climate is a bonus, especially during Zimbabwe’s hot summer months.

Nyanga is beautiful year-round. April to October (dry season) offers the best hiking weather with clear skies. The trout fishing season runs September to May. The rainy season (November-March) brings lush green scenery and the waterfalls at their most impressive, but mountain trails can be misty and wet.
