Victoria Falls Weekend Getaway 2026

Victoria Falls is one of the world's great natural wonders and the adrenaline capital of southern Africa. A three-day weekend gives you enough time to experience the thundering Falls from every angle, cruise the Zambezi at sunset, throw yourself off the bridge with a bungee cord, raft Class V rapids, explore local culture and still have time for a cold Zambezi Lager overlooking Batoka Gorge. Victoria Falls town is compact, walkable and geared entirely for visitors — making it the perfect weekend destination.

Friday – The Falls & Sunset Cruise

Afternoon

Arrive at Victoria Falls Airport (VFA). The town is 20 km away (10 minutes, $10-20 taxi). Check into your hotel — everything is walkable from the town centre. Head immediately to the Victoria Falls Rainforest Walk ($50 park entry). Walk all 16 viewpoints along the gorge rim. The Falls are 1,708 metres wide and 108 metres tall — the largest curtain of falling water on earth. Bring a rain jacket during high water (February-May) as the spray will soak you completely. The afternoon light creates rainbows in the mist.

Evening

Take a Zambezi River sunset cruise ($55-80, 2 hours). Drift upstream past hippos, crocodiles and elephants drinking at the riverbank as the African sun paints the sky orange and purple. Drinks and canapes are included. This is the quintessential Vic Falls experience. Return for dinner at The Lookout Cafe, cantilevered over Batoka Gorge with the rapids roaring below ($20-40 mains).

Saturday – Adrenaline & Culture

Morning

Choose your adrenaline fix from the Victoria Falls adventure menu:

The bungee jump from Victoria Falls Bridge is one of the most iconic in the world. The helicopter “Flight of Angels” gives an aerial perspective of the Falls that will stay with you forever.

Afternoon

Take a guided village tour ($30) to visit a local community, learn about Tonga and Ndebele culture, see traditional cooking and daily life. Browse the extensive craft market next to the Falls entrance — Shona stone sculptures, wooden carvings, beadwork, wire art and batik fabric. Bargain to 40-50% of the asking price. Visit the Big Tree, a 1,500-year-old baobab on the Falls road.

Evening

Dinner at The Boma ($45 per person) — an interactive African dining experience with drumming, traditional dancers, face painting and the chance to eat mopane worms (if you dare). The buffet includes game meats, sadza, and a whole roasted impala. For something more relaxed, Three Monkeys in town does excellent burgers, pizza and cocktails.

Sunday – Bridge Walk & Departure

Morning

Walk across the Victoria Falls Bridge to the Zimbabwe-Zambia border (no visa needed just to walk the bridge). The views of the gorge and the Falls from the bridge are incredible. If it is September-December (low water), arrange a Devil's Pool swim on the Zambian side ($100, book via Livingstone Island — requires a Zambia visa or KAZA UniVisa). You swim in a natural rock pool right at the edge of the 108-metre drop.

Late Morning

Visit the Victoria Falls National Park one more time (your ticket is valid for the day). The morning light is different from the afternoon — look for rainbows from the Danger Point viewpoint. Take final photos at the famous “boiling pot” at the base of the Falls.

Afternoon

Last shopping at the Elephant's Walk mall or the curio market. Lunch at The Palm Restaurant at Ilala Lodge or grab a Zambezi Lager at the Vic Falls Hotel's colonial veranda. Transfer to the airport for your departure (20 minutes).

Practical Tips

  • Visa: Zimbabwe visa on arrival ($30 single, $45 double entry). The KAZA UniVisa ($50) covers both Zimbabwe and Zambia — get it if you want to cross to Livingstone or swim in Devil's Pool.
  • Currency: USD is the primary currency. Carry cash — ATMs dispense USD but can run out. Cards work at hotels and major restaurants.
  • When to visit: High water (Feb-May) for the most spectacular Falls but prepare to get soaked. Low water (Sep-Dec) for Devil's Pool and to see the rock face. June-August is the sweet spot.
  • Safety: Victoria Falls town is very safe and walkable. Baboons are the main nuisance — do not leave food visible in your room.
  • Booking: Rafting and bungee can be booked on the day. Sunset cruise and helicopter should be booked 1-2 days ahead.
  • Rain jacket: Essential February-May when the spray drenches the Rainforest Walk. Your camera needs waterproof protection too.
