Zimbabwe 14-Day Itinerary 2026

Two weeks opens up the full breadth of Zimbabwe beyond the standard tourist trail. This extended route adds the dramatic Lake Kariba houseboat experience, the world-class canoeing and walking safaris of Mana Pools (a UNESCO site), the misty mountains of the Eastern Highlands, and deeper time in both Hwange and the Matobo Hills. With rest days and a mix of wilderness and culture, you will discover why experienced Africa travellers rank Zimbabwe among their favourite countries on the continent.

Days 1-2 – Victoria Falls

Day 1

Arrive at Victoria Falls Airport. Walk the Rainforest Trail ($50 entry) along all 16 viewpoints of the 1,708-metre wide, 108-metre tall Falls — the largest curtain of water on earth. Afternoon walk across the Victoria Falls Bridge. Evening Zambezi sunset cruise ($55-80) drifting past hippos and elephants with drinks and canapes.

Day 2

Adventure day: choose from bungee jumping ($160, 111m freefall), white-water rafting ($150, Class III-V rapids), gorge swing ($95), or helicopter flight ($150, “Flight of Angels”). Afternoon village tour ($30) and browse the craft market for Shona stone sculptures. Dinner at The Boma ($45, traditional African buffet with drumming).

Stay: Budget: $20 (Shoestrings) | Mid: $250 (Ilala Lodge) | Luxury: $500 (Victoria Falls Hotel)

Days 3-4 – Hwange National Park

Day 3

Drive 2.5 hours to Hwange, Zimbabwe's largest park (14,651 sq km) with over 40,000 elephants and one of Africa's largest painted dog populations. Afternoon game drive to pumped waterholes where hundreds of elephants drink together during the dry season. Spot lions, sable antelope, roan and kudu.

Day 4

Dawn walking safari ($50) through Big Five country on foot. Afternoon drive targeting painted dog areas (Ngweshla, Mandavu). Evening at a floodlit waterhole hide watching nocturnal visitors — elephants, hyenas and sometimes leopards come to drink in the dark.

Stay: Budget: Hwange Main Camp ($30) | Mid: Miombo Lodge ($180) | Luxury: Somalisa Camp ($700)

Days 5-6 – Lake Kariba

Day 5

Drive north from Hwange to Lake Kariba (5-6 hours). Kariba is one of the world's largest man-made lakes, stretching 220 km along the Zambezi Valley. Board a houseboat ($150-400 per person per night, all-inclusive) and watch the famous Kariba sunset — the drowned mopane trees silhouetted against orange skies are one of Zimbabwe's most photographed scenes. Try tiger fishing — Kariba is legendary for these fighting freshwater fish.

Day 6

Full day on the houseboat. Cruise to remote islands for game viewing from the water — elephants swim between islands, hippos and crocodiles are everywhere, and fish eagles call from the dead trees. Visit Matusadona National Park shoreline where buffalo herds drink at the water's edge. Afternoon fishing or simply relaxing on the upper deck. The houseboat experience is uniquely Zimbabwean.

Stay: Houseboat — Budget: Musango Camp ($150) | Mid: Kariba Ferry Hotel + boat ($200) | Luxury: Safari Houseboat ($400)

Days 7-8 – Mana Pools

Day 7

Drive east along the Zambezi escarpment to Mana Pools National Park (4-5 hours, 4x4 required). Mana Pools is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and arguably the best walking safari and canoeing destination in Africa. Join a canoe safari ($80-150) paddling down the Zambezi between hippos, crocodiles and elephants drinking on the banks. The albida woodland along the Zambezi floodplain is spectacular — massive trees with elephants standing on hind legs to reach the seed pods.

Day 8

Morning walking safari through the floodplain. Mana Pools is one of the few parks in Africa where you can walk freely (with a licensed guide). The photographic opportunities are world-class — this is where the famous images of elephants standing upright come from. In October-November, the carmine bee-eater colony arrives in the thousands, nesting in the riverbank. Rest afternoon at camp listening to hippos grunting in the Zambezi.

Stay: Budget: ZPWMA campsite ($15) | Mid: Ruckomechi Camp ($350) | Luxury: Chikwenya ($700)

Day 9 – Harare

Drive south from Mana Pools to Harare (5-6 hours via Chirundu Road). Afternoon exploring the capital — National Gallery of Zimbabwe (free, one of Africa's finest contemporary art collections), Mbare Market (Harare's largest and most vibrant market — take a guide), and the tree-lined avenues of the city centre. Dinner at Amanzi in Borrowdale or the Jazz Club at Sam Levy's Village. Rest evening — you have earned it after the bush.

Stay: Budget: $30 | Mid: $100 (Bronte Hotel) | Luxury: $250 (Meikles Hotel)

Days 10-11 – Eastern Highlands

Day 10: Nyanga

Drive east to the Eastern Highlands (4 hours to Nyanga). This mountain region is Zimbabwe's Scotland — misty peaks, pine forests, trout streams and cool temperatures. Visit Nyanga National Park ($15 entry), walk to Mutarazi Falls (the second-highest waterfall in Africa at 762 metres — higher than Victoria Falls!), and lunch at a trout farm. The landscape is utterly different from the rest of Zimbabwe.

Day 11: Chimanimani

Drive south to Chimanimani (3 hours). Hike in the Chimanimani Mountains — dramatic quartzite peaks with crystal-clear mountain pools and waterfalls. The Bridal Veil Falls is a highlight. This is Zimbabwe's premier hiking destination. Afternoon at leisure — this is your rest day in the mountains. The cool air and silence are restorative after days of safari and driving.

Stay: Budget: Chimanimani Hotel ($30) | Mid: Leopard Rock Hotel ($120) | Luxury: The Inn on Rupurara ($200)

Days 12-13 – Matobo Hills & Great Zimbabwe

Day 12: Matobo Hills

Drive west to the Matobo Hills near Bulawayo (5 hours from Chimanimani). Join a rhino tracking walk ($50-80, 3-4 hours) on foot through the granite landscape. The Matopos have the highest density of leopards per square kilometre anywhere in Africa. Visit Nswatugi Cave for San rock paintings up to 10,000 years old. See World's View, Cecil Rhodes' burial site with panoramic views across the endless boulders.

Day 13: Great Zimbabwe

Drive to Great Zimbabwe near Masvingo (4.5 hours). Explore the largest ancient stone ruins in sub-Saharan Africa — a medieval city built between the 11th and 15th centuries. Walk the Hill Complex, the Great Enclosure with its Conical Tower, and the Valley Complex. Visit the site museum for the Zimbabwe Birds ($15 total entry). Hire a local guide ($10-15) for the full experience.

Stay: Masvingo — Budget: $35 | Mid: Great Zimbabwe Hotel ($120) | Luxury: The Nest ($250)

Day 14 – Harare & Departure

Drive north to Harare (4 hours). Visit Chapungu Sculpture Park in Msasa ($5) to see and buy outstanding Shona stone sculptures displayed in beautiful gardens. Final shopping at the Avondale Flea Market (Saturday) or Doon Estate craft centre. Transfer to Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport for your departure.
